“At the end of every day, when the sun sets, the futures of five hundred children who were there to see it rise have been wiped out. This can’t be seen as business as usual. We are facing a road safety emergency”, said Mr. Jean Todt, FIA’s President and a proud Member of AUTOBEST Hall of Fame
Mr. Jean Todt, recently released his book “Millions of lives to save on the roads” in which he wants to draw attention on the millions of people who lose their lives every year in car accidents and makes the case for a road safety revolution. One that embraces a ‘safe system’ approach with the ambitious aim of eliminating fatalities altogether. We urgently need action from governments around the world. Todt calls for a global Road Safety Summit, modelled on the Earth Summits that have done so much to help us focus on the future of the planet. We know the scale of the problem and what needs to be done. It’s time to step up and deliver radical change.
Each year, around 1.4 million people are killed in motor vehicle collisions and many more are injured. Yet this global tragedy is hidden in plain sight. Casualties are too often accepted as part of the normal order of things. The forgotten 1.4 million who die on the roads every year deserve a legacy in the form of a safer world. Many of their deaths were preventable: the solutions are within our grasp.
AUTOBEST Jury is supporting Mr. Todt’s efforts for better road safety, implementing projects to reduce significantly the number of casualties. As the largest –by the number of represented countries, 31- independent motoring media Jury of Europe, AUTOBEST is considering specific media activities to make our roads a much safer place for the hundreds of millions of people on the roads daily. Even if 25.000 annual deaths toll on the European roads might look like a part of the „normal order of things”, AUTOBEST is considering a far to big figure for one of the most advanced roads network in the world and one of the top technologically car park.
Having started out as a world-class Rally co-driver from 1966 to 1981 and won many world champion titles in Rally, Cross-Country and Endurance as Peugeot-Sport Director, Jean Todt went on to meet with huge success in Formula 1, as head of the Ferrari team that dominated the sport at the turn of the millennium. He was elected President of the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile in 2009 and since 2015 has been the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety.
